An emotional day in north London as Tottenham prepared to say goodbye to their home for 118 years. And it seemed like an apt fixture for Spurs' final appearance before White Hart Lane getting torn down.
The hosts were immediately on the front foot, with United pinned inside their own half. It was a perfect start for Pochettino's side as Wanyama rose above Rooney to power in a header from Davies' cross from the left.
The crowd were enjoying themselves on such an occasion, watching the team move the ball around well, claiming 72 per cent of possession in the opening 15 minutes.
United warned the hosts with Martial attempting to bend the ball inside the far post, and this seemed to trigger a reaction from the home side, who piled on chance after chance from then on.
Son burst through the middle, and got a bit lucky to find himself in front of De Gea with all the time in the world. His shot was straight at the goalkeeper who parried the ball away.
It was Kane's turn next to head Eriksen's cross at the near post, and the ball skimmed the top of the bar on its way out.
De Gea was called into action with the Spaniard responding brilliantly as usual. Eriksen's cross took a wicked deflection and was looping into the far corner, before the keeper scrambled back to claw the ball off the line. Only a few minutes later, Alli burst down the right and thumped an early strike that forced a smart save from the United keeper.
The visitors found it hard to respond with Martial putting up a fight, but without much success. De Gea denied Kane one more time before the teams headed to the dressing rooms at half time.
Tottenham's celebration continued in the second half, especially after Kane guided Eriksen's cross past De Gea for his 49th goal at White Hart Lane.
Mourinho introduced the likes of Mkhitaryan and Herrera, which prompted an improved version when going forward. Martial worked well down the left to square the ball for Rooney who got a touch to claim the goal after it went in off Vertonghen.
United attempted to spoil the party, but were lucky not to be defeated by more goals as Alli's strike was cleared off the goal line by Phil Jones.
The rain began to fall and the flags went up for the last time at White Hart Lane as five minutes of stoppage time were added on, and the Red Devils pressed for a goal.
The referee whistled signalling the end of the match and a sea of supporters jumped onto the pitch to celebrate and bid farewell to White Hart Lane.
