The problem for Mauricio Pochettino, however, is that his team has not won a single trophy under his stewardship, and it could be that he is thinking of moving on. Following Spurs recent defeat in the FA Cup semi-final at the hands of Manchester United, after the match, he said that it felt like it was another Tottenham story day. It's not just the fact that this latest FA Cup defeat represented the eighth exit at a semi-final stage, but the fact that it seems that the team are displaying an inability to take that all-important last step.
It feels like Pochettino may have been preparing himself for this latest cup failure when he repeatedly talked the competition down. The difference recently was when he went on to say that Tottenham must continue playing in the same way with or without him. Perhaps he was paving the way for his departure in the not-too-distant future?
It is often the case that when a manager says something during an after-match press conference, it is driven by frustration or disappointment following a bad result. It should of course also be borne in mind that he is s foreigner. Expressing sentiments in another language often leads to difficulties in translation.
Having said that, if a manager repeats the same sentiments on several occasions as Pochettino has done, it could possibly be that it is something that is indeed playing on his mind.
Despite their lack of hardware in the trophy cabinet, Spurs have come a long way since Pochettino first arrived. If it had been forecast at the time, that the new manager would lead mounting two serious title challenges, and not only that, but they would reach one final, two semi,s and that they would turn over Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid in their Champions League campaign, it might not have been taken seriously.
There are still three years to go on Pochettino’s contract, but none-the-less, there have been rumours of interest in the Argentinian from Real Madrid and PSG. But when he was questioned on the topic of his continued employment with Tottenham, he referred to the three years left on his current contract but qualified it by saying that in Football, anything can happen.
There can be little doubt that Spurs have performed well this season, especially taking into account the fact that they have no home ground.
The redevelopment of White Hart Lane continues apace, with the new floodlights now being installed. When finished, there will be 324 lights in total, and these will be fitted to the underside of the stadium's canopy in sets of six. Upon completion and given permission by Haringey Council; the stadium will have a capacity for up to 62,062 spectators. The availability of the redeveloped home ground could give the Tottenham Hotspur squad the incentive it needs to go out and win a trophy, but as Darren Anderton said when he was interviewed, it is vital that Spurs retain Pochettino’s services. If Mauricio Pochettino is still in position as manager in the new season, and with their return to their new stadium, he could see his side win their long-awaited first trophy since they beat Chelsea 2-1 to lift the League Cup back in February 2008.
