If the counterattack had happened 15 years earlier and was pionereed by a certain Ronaldo, Brazil's iconic number 9, it wouldn't have been so different. The Dominican forward gave it his everything on the pitch and, combined with his mammoth strength, produced a special footballing moment.
A long ball was fired towards him in his own half. Instead of trying to control it, the striker produced a graceful spin to turn to escape from Mario Gaspar without even touching the ball. When Mariano reached the ball, he took a few touches to steady himself and then broke into the area.
Once again he beat the Villarreal full-back with a masterful sidestep. His shot at goal was saved by Sergio Asenjo but the ball fell to the oncoming Nabil Fekir who didn't miss his chance to put Lyon 2-0 to the good.
