'TMW' reports that the Merseysiders have been in talks with the representatives of Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka for some time now, with a deal beginning to look likely.
The German playmaker has become one of the most talked about players in Europe in recent times, owing to his impressive performances and his contract status, with the 22-year-old available to sign a pre-contract in the New Year.
La Liga pacesetters Barcelona were thought to be seriously interested in signing the Germany international, but he had his heart set on a move to the Premier League.
Oliver Bierhoff, the German national team's sporting director confirmed as much and Liverpool are believed to be beavering away behind the scenes to ensure that Goretzka is turning out for them during the 2018/19 season.
However, despite being available on a free Goretzka will not come cheap. As if often the case with free transfers, the player and his agent will look to use the lack of a fee to their advantage, asking for a higher signing-on fee than usual and a higher basic wage.
Liverpool have not been put off by his demands so far though, with talks having already reached an advanced stage.
Should Liverpool agree a deal, it would mean a complete revamp for their midfield ahead of next season, with RB Leipzig's Naby Keita also set to complete a switch to Anfield, whilst rumours persist linking Emre Can with a move to Juventus.
