The hosts scored either side of the break to earn a two-goal lead at Selhurst Park. Their second goal had been aided by some terrible defending from United, but it was similarly poor from Palace as Smalling headed home.
James Tomkins, for some reason, remained deep in the box on his own when a corner went out to Valencia, allowing Smalling to stand onside on the penalty spot and nod home from the chipped pass over the top.
