However, as has often been the case with Jurgen Klopp's side this season, a moment of madness at the back cost them.
With 75 minutes gone Dejan Lovren barged into Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the penalty area and whilst some might have considered it soft, the referee was quick to point to the spot.
Rooney took responsibility and duly fired the ball straight down the middle to draw Everton level and earn the blue half of Merseside a share of the spoils.
It was Rooney's first goal in a Merseyside and judging by his celebration it meant a lot to him.
