'It's a good time to pass the torch to the next generation', Arjen Robben conceded after the game. A player who was part of a generation which came inches away from lifting the first World Cup in the country's history.
After the Netherlands failed to qualify for the World Cup in Russia, despite Robben scoring a brace against Sweden, the Dutch FA released a statement in which they recalled that famous passage of play in South Africa.
'Nobody could stop him, except Casillas. His toe, rather', read the KNVB statement made public after the game.
In the 2010 World Cup final, Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas produced a fantastic save to deny Robben before Spain went on to win 1-0 in extra-time, something which will not be forgotten easily by the Dutch.
