Having joined United this summer for £30.75m, it had been expected that Lindelof would be one of the first names on the teamsheet at Old Trafford, however a shaky pre-season ha meant that he has yet to start a single Premier League game so far this season, playing a solitary minute in the weekend's draw with Liverpool at Anfield.
Mourinho insists that rather than giving up on the 23-year-old, he is simply easing him in due to the rigours and physical demands of Premier League football.
Lindelof has started both of United's Champions League games to far this season and will return to his former club on Wednesday with United set to face Benfica at the Estadio da Luz.
The Sweden international still has plenty of admirers in Portugal with Benfica boss Rui Victoria, who managed Lindelof during his time at the club, insisting that the player will show that he is worthy of a place in Mourinho's side.
Sepaking ahead of the game, Vitoria said of Lindelof: 'He is a very high quality player, he has been playing with Jose Mourinho.
'Of course when you move from the Portuguese championship to an English championship, so there is a phase, a stage of adaptation.
'I do foresee that in the future Lindelof will be a player of Jose Mourinho's team. He has a lot of value, he is very cold, very competitive and has great deal of quality.'
