Palace played out a topsy-turvy game against Bournemouth at Selhurst Park on Saturday and missed a glorious chance to gain ground on fellow struggles Swansea, West Ham and West Brom.
Roy Hodgson's side went down early on to a Jermain Defoe strike, before goals from Luka Milovojevic and Scott Dann gave them the lead.
That lead lasted all of four minutes as Defoe struck again in first-half stoppage time to restore parity.
It remained that way until the 93rd minute, when Charlie Daniels felled Wilfired Zaha to give Palace a penalty.
Despite Milivojevic having already scored from the spot in the game, Chrsitian Benteke took the responsibility, only for his tame effort to be kept out by Asmir Begovic.
Had he scored, Palace would have moved to 18th, but as things stand they currently prop up the table.
